3M Commercial Window Film Solutions – Atlanta – Boston – New York – Los Angeles – Florida
3M Renewable Energy Division (RED) reintroduced a series of new and improved 3M energy efficient products at this weeks 3M Dealer Meeting in Phoenix, Arizona. Designed to lower energy costs by ‘managing light’ coming into a building envelope, 3M’s newest spectrally selective window films – Prestige Series – have set a new standard of energy management performance.
3M Prestige Spectrally Selective Window Coating
The patented 3M Prestige Series Films control the sun’s electromagnetic energy by selectively filtering the different bands of the electromagnetic spectrum. The film is designed to allow in ‘visible light’ while rejecting a high percentage of infrared. Infrared energy is the band of energy that people feel as heat, making us uncomfortable, unproductive and dismayed at escalating energy bills.
What’s the Big Deal?
By rejecting heat while allowing in visible light, 3M Prestige Films have created a whole new opportunity for building owners and energy consultants who demand high performance but also need to maintain a buildings existing aesthetic. High VLT or ’visible light transmittance ‘ window films like 3M Prestige reduce the need for additional lighting that’s often required with darker, ‘tinted’ window films.
24/7 Performance
Once installed, 3M Prestige Films are nearly invisible on glass. A 3M ‘ thin film’ advancement, these scratch resistant sheets are custom cut and applied on the interior surface of existing single or double paned windows and doors. The Prestige series employs a patented multi-layered optical film technology from 3M which contain no metals and, as a result, will not interfere with sensitive networks, cell or wi-fi signals.
Warranted for 15 years from 3M and installed by certified professionals like Window Film Depot, 3M Prestige Series Window Films represent ‘next level technology’ your energy management planners need to consider.

So, Mr Building Engineer, you’ve installed the timers on the lights, replaced the air filters, upgraded the HVAC system and changed out the light-bulbs….What now – your energy costs are still out of control? How about a money saving ’face-lift’ from Window Film Depot with high performance solar window films?
Conservation of energy is the ‘other side of the coin’ in today’s debate around energy independence. For all the talk about solar, hydro, bio, and other ‘clean-tech’ solutions in the pipeline, one thing needs to be remembered. If we don’t conserve, we won’t win the battle, or the war.
Solar control window film is a proven solution for engineers, facility managers and building owners who work hard to drive building operating costs down through lower energy usage.
Building owners know that managing energy costs downward is critical to a profitable operation – and press their engineers for solutions that impact the bottom line.
Mr Building Owner, do us both a favor, on the next hot and sunny day, stand in front of one of your west facing windows and count to 20. Then, as you wipe the sweat from your brow, consider the benefits of solar control window films for a minute….and call the head engineer in for a meeting.
First, look at the performance. Solar films will block up to 75% of the heat gain streaming through windows. Low-E, (low emissivity), films provide dual purpose solutions by not only rejecting heat coming in, but also keep warm air in, acting as an insulator.
Second, solar film is easy to have installed. Solar films are installed on existing glass as a retro-fit in the matter of days, if not weeks for larger projects. Crews work off hours and on weekends to ensure a smooth and non-disruptive project.
Third, window film is a great investment that addresses multiple issues. Installed properly, solar window film will last form 20-30 years before needing replacement. For most buildings, the payback in energy savings alone is between 2 and 4 years. Ancillary benefits like improved tenant comfort, UV protection, glare control, added privacy and security make window film a ‘green solution’ with multiple value propositions.
Make sense? The next steps are easy. Window Film Depot provides national sales and installation services of solar, security and designer window films.

It goes without saying business & home owners need to consider energy-saving steps to lower their bills and with that in mind, did you know windows are one of the great energy wasters of any house or commercial property? Between 18%-25% of the total heat loss is from traditional double glazed sealed windows.
New technology, however, has resulted in more efficient energy saving windows that can significantly cut down on heat loss.
Heat loss is not the only concern with windows – they can also let in heat during summer weather, thus increasing the cost of running an air conditioner.
Modern windows use special materials to treat the window glass. Low emission coatings are applied to the inside surface which reduce heat loss through the glass. The windows are constructed of two layers of glass with an inert gas in between them. This gas – usually argon – reduces heat loss even more.
To prevent the sun from over-heating the sun during the summer, glass can be treated with window film that reduces interior temperatures.
There are many components to energy saving windows that can help cut down on your heating and cooling costs. Please visit Window Film Depot’s Green Energy Savings section to find more about rebates and tips.

The buildings in which we live, work, and play protect us from Nature’s extremes, yet they also affect our health and environment in countless ways. The design, construction, operation, maintenance, and removal of buildings take enormous amounts of energy, water, and materials.
As the environmental impact of buildings becomes more apparent, a new field called green building is gaining momentum. Green or sustainable building is the practice of creating healthier and more resource-efficient models of construction, renovation, operation, maintenance, and demolition. Research and experience increasingly demonstrate that when buildings are designed and operated with their lifecycle impacts in mind, they can provide great environmental, economic, and social benefits. Elements of green building include:
Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy
Water Stewardship
Environmentally Preferable Building Materials and Specifications
Waste Reduction
Toxics
Indoor Environment
Smart Growth and Sustainable Development

A few months ago in October, Window Film Depot was awarded the contract to install 3M’s Low-E 35% amber window film on 80,000 + sq ft of windows on the new multi-million dollar for a leading research company in the Boston area. Covering over 1,900 panes of high-performance, clear, double-paned Low E glass, the 3M solar film was installed over a 32 day period with a team of Window Film Depot installers, led by Chris Sullivan, SVP, Window Film Depot, Inc.
3M’s Low-E, or “Low-Emissivity”, window film is designed as an “all season” window film – it saves you money all year long. The patented ‘thin-film’ coating from 3M is installed on the interior surface of the window glass and blocks out 57% of the sun’s heat. The film also acts as an insulator, helping to control heat loss by reflecting back ambient heat during the winter time (up to 23% on double pane glass).
Backed by a strong commercial warranty from 3M, thin film also helps to reduce glare and blocks out 99% of the UV light, protecting occupants and property from the sun’s harmful rays.
An independent ROI study completed by engineers forecast the payback of the film installation at less than 3-4 years based on energy savings alone. Facilities engineersaround the world recognize window film as a proven solution for controlling heat gain / loss through the building envelope.
Solar window films designed for energy management may be eligible for tax rebates or credits made available by the EPA act of 2005 as well as local utility rebates. LEED creditscan be earned in four distinct categories with the application of window films as a retro-fit building solution.
Thinking about ‘cap and trade’ and lowering your carbon footprint? Window Film Depot is the world’s largest installing dealer of solar control films and a 3M “National Dealer of the Year”. WFD works closely with property management firms and building owners to help navigate the world of payback studies, rebates and credits for its clients.
Installation matters: Window Film Depot completed the difficult project on time and on budget. According to Sullivan, “We erected 11 tiers of scaffolding built in the interior atrium of the building. We repelled down from the interior skylights to access a number of ‘hard to reach’ panes of glass. We worked 32 days straight to complete the install within the 40 day window the client demanded. When we were done, the Project Manager shared with me that they couldn’t believe we met the schedule and performed at such a high level under challenging circumstances. And they are equally impressed with the solar performance of the Low-E film from 3M.

Window Film and Energy Conservation, San Diego California
Window Film Depot attended the International Solar Power show in San Diego this month where ‘green’ technology providers and cutting edge ‘CleanTech’ companies were gathered to present renewable energy (RE) and energy conservation solutions for both home and business.
Designed to help lower American dependence on carbon based fossil fuels, solar power is coming of age. The excitement at the show was matched only by the level of expertise and passion that’s been driving this industry for over 30 years. Renewable energy firms from across the globe were eager to discuss business opportunities and partnerships with established distribution companies already working in the US market in related fields. In short, these are smart and dedicated folks working on some pretty cool stuff – and opportunity to Partner abounds. …… So, what else did we learn?
1. Solar power is truly a ‘green’ energy resource. It’s clean, silent, abundant, ‘American’ – and available now!
2. Solar Power is affordable. Leasing programs, utility company rebates and Federal and State tax credits make solar power cost competitive to traditional power in many markets.
3. Big Brother is watching. The Feds have recently extended the solar power tax credits for 8 more years. This makes it much less expensive to purchase (or lease) your solar power. Government subsidies are ‘greasing the wheels’ for renewables (RE) like solar, wind, hydro and bio-fuels. Go here to learn more http://www.dsireusa.org/
4. It’s only a matter of time. As the cost for electricity continues to rise and pressure builds on government to regulate fossil fuels more aggressively (saving the planet, by the way) and solar power technology improvements continue their march to true grid parity, it’s this author’s opinion, that the solar power and sun control business will explode in the US.
Window Film Depot recommends that you look into ways you can both reduce your energy consumption – through the installation of solar energy window films, for instance - and how you generate the power to run your life, your business, and your household. Solar control is cooler – and a smarter investment - than you may realize.

A concern in school & college campus buildings across America was the glare on white boards from bright light entering the windows. Solar film is the solution – Solar film has a visible light transmittance rating of 42.8 percent, which doesn’t darken the space but instead will reduce the glare enough that students can view the white board more easily. Solar film & security film also is optimum for windows in museums & art districts because the film’s 99 percent ultraviolet rejection rating helps protect artwork on display in the museums.
Energy experts say there are two kinds of glare problems in buildings. One is called “disability glare,” and this is what happens when a light source reflects and essentially obscures the thing you’re looking at, reducing its contrast and making it very difficult to look at. For example, you might be sitting under a skylight on a bright sunny day, or under a bright ceiling light, and that light is reflected from the book you’re reading into your eyes. The light disables your ability to read since the low contrast makes it difficult to see the black ink on the bright white page.

Going green does not always require all-new energy systems. There are several ways to create high performance schools by making older systems run more efficiently, saving capital, reducing risk of failure and maintaining the green sensibility that contributes to environmental health.Green doesn’t have to mean exotic either. Retro ideas such as office-building windows that open to let in fresh air are in vogue. Tall windows with ”light shelves” or “window film treatments” to bounce or reflect daylight into interior spaces and motion sensors to shut lights off when people leave rooms trim energy costs.Window Film Depot also provides security film installation services for corporate, retail and residential customers across North America.
